When lighting designer Victoria Jerram and her husband David wanted to make more of their 1980s bungalow, they opted for an upwards extension. While a one-storey home had been suitable for the family while their sons were younger, as they got older the need for increased space became pressing. The couple loved the location, overlooking the River Thames with views of Hampton Court Gardens, which led them to decide to improve not move.
Having already successfully added a conservatory and a single-storey kitchen extension with bifold doors, Victoria and David decided to convert the loft to provide two more bedrooms. Being a lighting designer, Victoria had a clear vision for the home. She wanted to showcase her lighting design skills in an affordable way, while making the house feel light, bright and airy. It was also important that the new living arrangements maximised the beautiful views. The lighting scheme minimised the use of downlights and experimented with different lighting techniques, and used a Lutron home automation system.
