Lighting, Problem-Solving & the Journey to Architectural FX

Lighting, Problem-Solving & the Journey to Architectural FX – Read about Teo Marian’s passions and story.

What attracted you to the lighting profession?

My career started in engineering, and I’ve always had a passion for making things work. From an early age, I was drawn to problem-solving—figuring out how systems operate and improving them. Over the years, I moved into sales, but I never saw it as just selling. It was always about delivering solutions and creating value. Lighting became a natural fit because it combines technical precision with creativity, and no two projects are ever the same.

How did you become involved with Architectural FX?

I’ve spent years in engineering, renewables, lighting controls and sales, always looking for opportunities where I can make a real impact. My connection to Architectural FX came through a shared vision—pushing boundaries in lighting solutions and delivering high-quality results. The opportunity to join AFX was about more than just a job; it was about bringing my experience in technology and sales into a space where I could drive real change.

For you, what is the most exciting aspect of working in lighting?

Lighting is one of those industries where technical knowledge and creative thinking go hand in hand. I love the problem-solving element—working with architects, designers, and contractors to find the best solution for each project. It’s not about selling a product; it’s about delivering a tailored approach that enhances the final outcome. The best part is seeing the transformation from initial discussions to the finished installation, knowing I played a part in making it happen.

What is the most frustrating aspect of working in the lighting industry?

Developing products and solutions for clients who constantly change their minds. You invest time into creating the perfect solution, only for the goalposts to shift repeatedly. While flexibility is part of the job, it can be frustrating when decisions aren’t finalised, and projects get delayed. That said, it’s all part of the challenge, and the end result is always worth it.

Is there a person who has had a big influence on you in business and your success?

I’ve been fortunate to work with great teams and mentors throughout my career, but success is never down to just one person. It’s a mix of experiences, lessons learned (sometimes the hard way), and constantly adapting. That said, I will always remember Martin Deacon, my mentor in project management at Lutron, who unfortunately passed away from cancer. He had a huge impact on the way I approach my work, and his lessons in leadership and problem-solving still influence me today.

Top 5 reasons why I love my job:

  1. I get to work with a wide range of professionals across the construction and design industry.
  2. Solving complex problems and delivering solutions is what drives me.
  3. Every day is different, keeping the work fresh and engaging.
  4. Being part of a dynamic, fast-moving business means no red tape—just action. Also a pretty fun bunch
  5. There’s room for growth, innovation, and new opportunities.

#MyLightingPassion in one sentence:

I thrive on turning technical challenges into creative, real-world lighting solutions that make a difference and to enjoy at the end the aesthetic result

Something not many people know about me:

I am a passionate mountain hiker and have explored some of the world’s most iconic peaks, including the Himalayas, Machu Picchu, Patagonia, Alaska, and the Atlas Mountains—with no plans of stopping anytime soon.
